I made drastic updates to the Summerhays Music of Orem website just a few years ago. Since then, I worked with their sister store, Summerhays Music of Murray, to give it their website a modern, user-friendly design while saving them over $2000/year in website-related costs.
Why Migrate the Summerhays Website?
Summerhays’ previous site was built using BigCommerce, an online shopping platform. But there were three key issues they had with it:
- Summerhays was paying almost $300/month for BigCommerce. Online sales only made up a small portion of their overall sales, so they weren’t getting much value compared to what they spent. They could get roughly the same service from Shopify for a fraction of the cost.
- BigCommerce was frustrating and clunky to use. As a small business, it was important that the site builder is easy for key employees to use who may not have any experience with coding or making websites. That way, they don’t have to wait on an outside specialist like me to make updates. In its current form, BigCommerce’s site builder isn’t nearly as intuitive as other platforms like Wix, Shopify, or Squarespace.
- The website’s overall design looked cluttered and outdated. Part of this resulted from an inconsistent group of people treating the website as an afterthought. That said, I feel they were partially caused by limitations with the BigCommerce platform itself.
My Contributions To The Website
I laid the groundwork in setting up the website:
- Created the overall layout and design
- Migrated all products and pages from BigCommerce to Shopify
- Updated old, out of date content
- Created new landing pages for services
After that, I passed the site on to someone else on the Summerhays team to handle all the technical backend stuff.
